Happy Mag’s guide to Liveworks Festival of Experimental Art 2018

Next month, Liveworks Festival of Experimental Art will return to Sydney’s Carriageworks for ten huge days of performance and cross-disciplinary art. Running from 18th to the 28th of October, the festival will boast an extraordinary catalogue of Australian and Asia Pacific artists.

So before you go immerse yourself in the festival’s performances, installations, virtual reality and more, we’ve compiled an extensive guide to this incredible event.

Next month, Liveworks Festival of Experimental Art will return for 10 days of performances, installations, virtual reality and more… be wise and prepare yourself with our extensive guide to this incredible event.

Daniel Kok and Miho Shimizu – XHE

Of all the premieres happening at Liveworks this year, there’s perhaps none that we’re more excited for than XHE.

A collision of dance, sculpture and live electronic music, XHE will unfold over the five-hour duration of an evening. While audience members are free to enter and exit the performance as they please, they are encouraged to stay for at least 90-minutes. Not that that’ll be an issue.

Once you immerse yourself kaleidoscopic performance, we’re sure you’ll find it incredible difficult to leave.

Angela Goh – Uncanny Valley Girl

Following a string of sell-out presentations in Melbourne, London and New York, the trailblazing choreographer Angela Goh is bringing her solo dance practise to Sydney next month.

Throughout her new performance Uncanny Valley Girl, Goh will strike our deepest fears and anxieties. With her ‘fembot’, Goh takes our dread of being destroyed by technology and feminises it, as though “our ultimate fear is not only the rise of the machine, but the rising up of the female body.”

Asuna – 100 Keyboards

Also a part of Liveworks next month, pioneering Japanese sound artist Asuna will be bringing his internationally acclaimed experimental music performance to Carriageworks for its Sydney premiere.

With one hundred cheap plastic keyboards playing the same key, sound waves multiply and bounce off one another creating a truly mesmerising listening experience.

On October 20th, Asuna will also be holding a workshop where he’ll discuss use of sound as conceptual practice in the field of contemporary art.

Hannah Brontë – Fempre$$: WISHWITCH

A club night turned immersive installation, Hannah Brontë’s Fempre$$: WISHWITCH is a spectacular celebration of women of colour.

With a blend of hip hop, video art, installation and performance, Brontë will transport you to an alternate reality where societal structures are challenged and matriarchal futures manifest.

On top of all these performances, Liveworks will also host a range of workshops and talks. Head to the official website for the full festival program.
