Hans Zimmer says he was “starstruck” when collaborating with Radiohead’s Jonny Greenwood

Few things compare to the thrill of working with your hero; but for a composer as monolithic as Hans Zimmer, you might think few contemporaries would be left to look up to. Unless, it’s Jonny Greenwood.

Hans Zimmer said he was “starstruck” when collaborating with Radiohead’s Jonny Greenwood on their Blue Planet II soundtrack.

Recently it was announced that Radiohead and Zimmer would be joining forces on a soundtrack contribution for David Attenborough’s Blue Planet II.

Following its release, Zimmer said in an interview with CBC that he was in awe meeting the Radiohead guitarist.

“Oh, I’ll just admit it, I was a bit starstruck,” Zimmer says of Greenwood. “He is my favourite film composer.” He also said he was scared to “mess up their song, because they’re not just anybody.”

Greenwood is known for his compositional work on films like There Will Be Blood, The Master and Inherent Vice.

The collaboration was new version of Bloom – a cut from The King of Limbs re-dubbed (ocean) bloom – which featured in a short-film prequel to the series earlier this month. It was recorded by the BBC’s own concert orchestra under Zimmer’s guidance, with Yorke contributing new vocals.

“’Bloom’ was inspired by the original Blue Planet series so it’s great to be able to come full circle with the song and reimagine it for this incredible landmark’s sequel,” Thom Yorke said about the collaboration.

“Hans is a prodigious composer who effortlessly straddles several musical genres, so it was liberating for us all to work with such a talent and see how he wove the sound of the series and ‘Bloom’ together.”
