The 80s haven’t gone anywhere, and GL turned Oxford Art Factory into one giant disco to prove it

The GL sound is a mess of neon synths, breezy vocals, funky percussion and loads of attitude adding up to one thing: a hell of a party.

The 80s were so much more than leg warmers, cocaine and Devo, folks, and glittery synth-pop duo GL are here to school us. Groovy disco babes Graeme and Ella recently played a couple of spots in Sydney and Melbourne to celebrate the release of double A-side Destiny/Reflect, the first follow-up to their debut LP released last year.

Touch has been a stand-out within the Australian electronic scene, the album’s sound being a world away from much else we’ve heard in recent times (although you will hear synth-cut similarities with 80s revival counterparts Client Liaison).

They characterise the kind of jams you can just slide right into without even thinking about it. We copped all of this and more when they hit Sydney over the weekend.

Arriving just in time to catch Fortunes on support, we slipped into a smooth groove all too easily. The Future Classic signees rep their own unique style of R&B soul, having released their debut EP Undress earlier this year.

GL followed soon after, the crowd well and truly warmed up for the main event. Graeme set up on drums and Ella on synth, pipes and the moves, they had every single guest hanging on every note. It was just one big party, every punter was dancing, even to the slower numbers. Honestly, you can’t fight it; just give in to the power of GL.

They venture to the UK and Europe soon for a short tour and will hopefully be hitting up Oz again soon. We’re too keen to see what they do next.
