Get lost in You Maintain the Stain, the latest glimmer of fuzz from Mermaidens

Mermaidens have delivered another woozy single, and it’s damn lovely in all its “fuzzy messed up-ness”.

You Maintain the Stain showcases the full spectrum of music we’ve come to expect from New Zealand’s twinkly rockers, erring from moments of stripped back, heady post-punk, to jangly indie-rock. It very dynamic, and it’s very cool.

Mermaidens’ new single You Maintain the Stain is incredibly real. The New Zealand rockers have hit their stride in a sound where raw post punk meets refined, jangly rock.

Mermaidens is made up of guitarist/vocalist Gussie Larkin, bassist/vocalist Lily West, and drummer Abe Hollingsworth. Since their formation in 2013, the indie-rockers have come to develop a mesmerising synergy. It shines through in tracks like You Maintain the Stain, showcasing an incredibly refined sound that maintains a home-made, garage feel.

Every note makes a point, especially in Lily’s vocal performance; it’s controlled, yet super hearty and raw. She delivers in You Maintain the Stain, smothering the chaos of the guitars with her smooth-as-honey melodies.

It’s clear that Mermaidens are a wealth of talent who’ve consistently delivered excellent music. Their 2017 album Perfect Body scored a nomination for the prestigious Taite Music Prize in 2018.

If you love them as much as we do, you can catch their live shows next month.
