After confirming KISS will never make an album again, Gene Simmons’ next pursuit in the music industry is to trademark the iconic ‘devil horns’ hand sign.
Apparently, KISS invented the gesture while they were on their Hotter Than Hell tour in 1974.
Who did it first? Gene Simmons is claiming to have invented the iconic rock ‘n’ roll hand gesture and has even applied to trademark it.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, Simmons is awaiting a response from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office after he filed an application to trademark “a hand gesture with the index and small fingers extended upward and the thumb extended perpendicular.”
“According to Simmons, this hand gesture was first used in commerce Nov. 14, 1974. That appears to correspond with Kiss’ Hotter Than Hell tour.”
The hand gesture has many striking similarities between the ASL sign for ‘love,’ the 5th Century Buddhist symbol for the Devil’s horns and the John Lennon’s gesture on the cover for The Beatles’ 1966 single, Yellow Submarine/Eleanor Rigby.
Not to mention everyone’s favourite superhero from Queens, good old Spidey.
