From Pink Floyd to soft porn: The NSFW Hipgnosis photo shoots for Club International magazine

You’ll no doubt know the name Hipgnosis as the creators of some of the most iconic album artworks of all time, from the entirety of Pink Floyd’s catalogue to works for Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath and many, many more.

And while the design agency are no doubt best known for their affiliation with music, their illustrious career stretches far past this distinction. Once such example is the time Storm Thorgerson and Aubrey Powell – aka Hipgnosis – collaborated with British softcore porn magazine, Club International.

Check out some of the work that legendary design studio Hipgnosis did for soft porn mag, Club International.

Club International was launched in 1972 by the Paul Raymond organisation, and under the guidance of editor Tony Power, collected material from brilliant creatives and writers from around the world.

As Dangerous Minds note, Hipgnosis was commissioned to contribute to the magazine’s fashion spreads. The opportunity allowed Thorgerson and Powell the chance to mess around with some ideas which would later be re-use on album covers, such as Pink Floyd’s A Nice Pair (note the use of the ‘flasher’ motif).
