Folly Rae – Run For Cover

Before I start this review of Folly Rae, I just want to point out how fucking great it is that there are so many female musicians doing their thing, being confident in their work and what they are doing and most importantly, being recognised for it. So many babes. And here we have another great example of the surge in power of female musicians this year.

Folly Rae, the half-English, half-Norwegian songtress based in Hertfordshire (represent!), has been putting out emotionally-charged, electro-ballads for a couple of years now and has just dropped her latest track Run For Cover following the incredibly positive reception of her previous release Free Your Mind.

The video clip for Run For Cover, directed by Calum Creasey, is dark and moody shot depicting the volatile nature of young love. Reflecting on the constant power struggle and see-sawing needs for independence within young relationships – Folly Rae is writing the kind of tracks that offers the strength you need whilst fighting with a loved one or feeling lost within decisions that have been made. The vulnerability of Run For Cover is carried by a dark, heavy bass line and covered by the power of the beat. It’s the feeling of picking yourself back up after a loss.

Folly Rae’s latest track has been the product of a year working with Sticky Studios (the team behind Ed Sheeran and Paloma Faith) and I was so happy to see that she has been getting an immense amount of support from Huw Stephens and BBC Introducing. This chick is leading up to her upcoming EP which is set to be released in January 2015 and Run For Cover seems to be just the start of a super exciting next year.
