Fantastic Negrito is bringing his rockish blues to Australian shores in 2019

Fantastic Negrito’s down-to-earth blues is set to grace stages in Sydney and Melbourne, with sideshows announced in the lead-up to Byron Bay Bluesfest.

This Grammy Award winning artist, who won Best Contemporary Blues Album in 2016 for The Last Days of Oakland, was first noticed on a smaller stage, when he played NPR’s Tiny Desk Contest in 2015.

Fantastic Negrito is bringing his self-taught bluesy rock to Sydney and Melbourne with Bluesfest sideshows announced for 2019.

His music is rooted deeply in the blues, American folk and roots. It’s sound and history; both personal and political.

A self-taught musician, Negrito seems to approach music as he does life – by learning from the mistakes, and by using it to survive, to find peace, to spread love.

If you need some true words to live by, look no further than Bullshit Anthem from the 2018 album Please Don’t Be Dead: “Take that bullshit and turn it into good shit”.

The album aims a mic at the ills of our culture, including addiction, guns, and overconsumption.

“I wrote this album because I fear for the life of my black son,”  Fantastic Negrito for NPR.

“I fear for the lives of my daughters. I am uncertain about what kind of future they will face. Will someone shoot up their school? Will they become addicted to prescription pills? Will they wind up on the street, sleeping under freeways and overpasses? Will the police murder my son?”

He lovingly calls his fans NegritoNation. They seem to act under the auspice of, “I don’t believe in genres; I believe in music, I don’t believe in countries; I believe in people,” as Fantastic Negrito phrases it.
