The quarter-life crisis. Sigh.

Yes, you have heard of it. If you haven’t had that moment where your 20 or so year old friend “Sophie” is freaking about what she is doing with her life, then there is no doubt that multiple TED talks are out there deconstructing the issue just for your convenience. This ridiculous concept is real and it’s happening all around you. It’s the moment when you realise that the sugar-coated land of opportunity or adulthood as people tend to call it, is not all what your parents told you it was going to be. Pretty melancholy, right? Enter Dazy Crown and his anthem for the 20 or so year olds dealing with this bittersweet realityPerfect Dream.

Dazy Crown Perfect Dream

Juggling surf rock and lo-fi pop sounds with lyrics about politics and the unrealistic reality of the American Dream, Dazy Crown pushes boundaries with Perfect Dream.

Dazy Crown is the project initiated by singer/songwriter Thomas Little. Hailing from Ontario, Canada, the multi-instrumentalist is spending time studying in Norwich, Britain, meanwhile making some immensely thought-provoking tunes.

Inspired by Mac Demarco, Alvvays, Real Estate and Courtney Barnett, Little has said that the project was a switch to a more “Achievable than desirable” sound in comparison to previous work under his own name. Before the switch, Little even stopped performing, writing, and playing music for a few months, was close to selling his gear (shock emoji face) before he randomly created the riff heard in Perfect Dream which sparked his creative juices to flow. Because the sound was quite different to his Thomas Little work he decided to change the name to Dazy Crown as the music sounded a bit ‘dazed’.

Little describes his musical process as: “Either start(ing) with a funky riff that I randomly came up with, or a chord progression, then work around it”. “I’m horrible when it comes to writing lyrics” he says. “I usually don’t write them until I’ve set a day for recording and know that they’ve got to be done by then, so I usually just sing random words to then work out a melody.”

That’s hard to believe as the lyrics in Perfect Dream are about “How unrealistic it is to assume that all individuals, regardless of their gender, class, and race, exist in an equal playing ground when it comes to achieving financial success and stability.” Pretty heavy stuff. Going through a pretty tough breakup, Little wasn’t sure why he wrote those lyrics. I guess he channeled all of his passion into a political discourse instead.

Perfect Dream is out now on Bandcamp. It’s the ideal soundtrack to the quarter-life crisis you’re probably about to have after reading this.
