Exclusive: Rainbow Chan covers Spookyland

Rainbow Chan rocks and you know it. She’s wormed her way into our ears and hearts with gem after gem. She’s a producer, a song writer and by day a Saxomophone teacher. She’s also a tastemaker and as tastemakers go has pretty incredible taste her self. We’re stoked to share her cover of Spookyland’s seminal debut The Silly Fucking Thing exclusively on Happy.

Okay so I have no doubt in my mind that Rainbow is an Annie Clarke fan. May be it was those incredible press shots with the solid pastel backgrounds that gave it away. Or maybe those major 7 chords? Regardless, you could do far worse than St Vincent as your source of joojoo and I for one am a huge fan of both.

She’s mad busy and it’s all enviable stuff. Remixes by Nick Zinner, Vivid Festival (twice now as part of Since I Left You), crowd funing for vinyl that actually got funded (I have a copy) and of course live shows. If you ever see her perform live you get the immediate feeling that she lives and breathes her art. She’s a dynamo and brings her A game even if you’re a B or C grade crowd.

Old mate Spooky is at the beginning of his journey and about a month ago our folksy storyteller released a pretty gnarly full band version of his high rotation demo The Silly Fucking Thing, a first release from his upcoming four track Rock And Roll Weakling EP.

The new release, produced by Tony Buchen and out on Monday Records is enjoying some very serious interweb attention despite being the only track on offer. With everyone feeling like they want more Spooks,  fellow Sydney storyteller Rainbow Chan has in a round about way come to the rescue with a super duper glitchtastic cover of The Silly Fucking Thing.

It’s a transformative work, to say the very least, as if existing on the opposite end of the phone wire. Rounding out the narrative of Gordon’s broken heart, Chan takes a moment to be miserable, rather than spiteful or vengeful about the turn of events. We love both. Enjoy.
