Everybody loves a good cover song. These are the 10 best by Aussies in 2015

There are many different cover songs you can come across. There are some great ones, like Jeff Buckley’s cover of Leonard Cohen‘s Hallelujah and Johnny Cash‘s cover of Nine Inch Nails’ Hurt, two covers that transcend the OG track. Then you have the utterly bizarre, like that time Dave Grohl covered Creed’s horrid abomination of a song Arms Wide Open.

We’ve already looked back on the best songs, the best videos and the best album artwork of the year. So as we all stay up waiting for Santa tonight, why not have a listen to some on the best covers of 2015.

Best Aussie covers 2015

It’s been a helluva year, and we can’t finish celebrating without recognising the best covers of 2015. Here are 10 Aussies who totally nailed it.

State Trooper – On The Stoop

Taking on The Boss isn’t something you don’t do lightly. Yet, Sydney’s On The Stoop aren’t the type who shy away, and man they go balls out on this one. The wild weirdness of the original is emulated, then swift kick up the ass courtesy of a dangerous guitar riff

Confide In Me – Tame Impala

2015 was the year of Tame Impala. There is no denying that, the Parker Pack claimed the spotlight with the epic Let It Happen and haven’t stepped from it since. Their cover of the Princess of Pop was picked up for that mental guitar solo, but the true genius lies in those drums.

Enter Sandman – Art vs. Science

AvS covering one of the Big Four may raise a few eyebrows, but anyone who has seen their live show knows that these dudes rock pretty hard. Giving one of the most classic metal songs of all time a funky edge worked ridiculously well, proving the trio are one of the most versatile bands going around.

Cigarettes Will Kill You – Alpine

Taking on a Ben Lee classic without batting an eye, Melbourne’s Alpine pricked plenty of ears with this smooth rendition bathed in vocal harmonies and lush keys. Draw a warm bath and let it sink in.

Left Hand Free – SAFIA

SAFIA copped a lot of shit for this one, though to be frank YouTube criticism doesn’t count as real criticism. This wasn’t just a case of slowing a track down, the arrangement is elegant and Ben Woolener’s voice is near perfect.

Hard To Say I’m Sorry – Sarah Belkner and Katie Wighton

One of Chicago’s classics, Hard To Say I’m Sorry is nothing short of being epic. Sarah Belkner’s pairing with the delightful Katie Wighton resulted in something just as heart-wrenching than Peter Cetera’s original.

I Didn’t Know I Was Trouble – OM Collective

This isn’t a straight cover like the others on this list, but fuck it, it’s pretty spectacular. A rework of a Tay-Tay mega hit, OM Collective’s debut release shows off their penchant for majestic and tempered arrangements.

Not Many – One Day

Kings of the Sunday Sesh, the One Day crew were born to cover this classic Scribe track. It’s one of the best hip-hop hooks to come out of the 2000s, and the new references keep it relevant for their fans. Also, Joyride is wearing that Magpies jersey like a boss.

All My Friends – Gang of Youths

When a cover has more YouTube plays than the original you know it’s hot shit. And it’s only appropriate that this song be covered by a band who are the cutest group of mates and give the best hugs known to man. Seriously.

Dare – Hiatus Kaiyote

That vocal. Daaaaaaaaaaaamn.
