Emma Anglesey fires on all musical cylinders with her newest track and video, Mary Anne

Emma Anglesey has just released a new track Mary-Anne, and accompanying music video, that unites the earthy with the urban to create a truly unique and evocative piece.

The release came about on the eve of Anglesey’s tour, which kicked off in her home town of Launceston, and then moved through Neika, Berridale, Hobart, Melbourne, finishing up at Gasoline Pony in Sydney December 7.

Mary-Anne from Emma Anglesey combines all our favourite things: soaring vocals, a syncopated drum beat and layers galore.

Anglesey’s incredible vocal range is showcased in her melody, delving into deep alto tones followed by smooth transitions into her higher register with such fluidity.

Its an emotional pain killer”, the musician says. “I wrote it to turn a feeling of struggle into a feeling of revelling in the fight.

The contrasting driving rhythm from the rock n roll backing makes the track all the more captivating, encapsulating the powerful warrior spirit of the song.

The defining feature of Mary Anne would have to be the layering of the sweeping string section, arranged by award-winning composer Jonathon Dreyfus. The harmonies by the strings, paired with the gripping backing vocals adds to the ethereal feel of the melody.

The singer songwriter, in collaboration with Tim Kling, has produced a stunning music video which celebrates the Tasmanian wilderness and “magnifies our human reaction to an opening landscape.”

The clip situates Anglesey amongst breathtaking views as she navigates within the wildness of her environment. We particularly enjoyed the little dance interlude nearing the end of the video.

Mary-Anne is Anglesey’s second release produced by Joshua Barber, who is known for his collaborations with Gotye and Archie Roach. Anglesey and Barber’s first collaboration, Bike, landed the artist as a Triple J Unearthed Spotlight artist.

The gifted songwriter is psyched to start her tour this month. “I love the process of creating” she says. “Songs can take you to a brand new place and completely change the way you see the world.
