Darlia

I get lots of publicity emails and press releases, most of which are just not my thing. But every now and then a gem turns up in my inbox. That happened today.

Darlia are a three piece from the UK. After being met with positive feedback all over Britain, they released their Candyman EP earlier this month. They’re young, maybe just out of their teens. Despite their age, Nathan, the bleach blonde lead vocalist, has been planning their success for a while.

The three met in high school, but were in different social groups and barely spoke to one another. They landed jobs as cleaners at the school after they graduated, a pretty strange decision for three guys who felt so isolated throughout their formative years. Nevertheless, it turned out to be a good one: they eventually got fired after a couple of months for sitting around playing music instead of scrubbing the urinals.

Fresh outta the fridge are Darlia, added to the Splendour line-up, they’ve just released their debut EP, Candyman. Check out the spook.

Dalia have been together for less than a year, but have already toured the UK twice, dropped their first EP, and have enough material to put together a debut album. One of those magic bands that fall together quickly and easily, and people take notice. Starting first with gossipy interest from their hometown, the ever-hungry industry quickly cottoned on, patting the guys on the back all the way to the recording studio.

This is the first I’ve heard of them on the Australian grapevine, but I’m gonna jump on the bandwagon and predict big things from the trio. They play that super satisfying American grunge, an interesting choice for such a British band. The confusion between the two cultures is charming, disarming, and addictive.

Have a listen for yourself, and be sure to check out the creepy clip to Candyman. Oh, and they’re on the line-up for Splendour, so if you like what you hear you can catch ’em live in July.
