I’ve climbed up on my roof and I’m listening to Courtney Barnett. It’s dusk and the sky is a blend of pinks and blues; these evenings were made for this music. You should do the same. Unless your roof is pitched in which case don’t because you might fall. Mine is flat. Sit back and relax wherever you are and have a cheeky up of tea or a stiff drink and enjoy this song about gardening and panic attacks.

Courtney Barnett is 25 and from Melbourne. She sings, she writes songs and she plays guitar very well indeed. Her music has a folky, garagey feel to it, with a lazy bass whurring in the background. Her meandering, laid back, witty rambles hold your attention. It’s easy to get lost in this; her imagination makes the mundane so colourful.

It’s all about life in the everyday and not caring about what the world thinks you should be doing. In Are You Looking After Yourself, she proclaims ”I don’t want no nine to five, telling me that I’m alive”. She doesn’t want to settle down, read the evening news, blah. She’s got the balls to do her own thing.

Barnett established her own independent record label in 2012: ‘Milk!‘ records. She’s released 2 EP’s from Milk!; I’ve Got a Friend Called Emily Ferris in 2012 and a second in 2013, How to Carve a Carrot into a Rose. The double EP; A Sea of Split Peas, combining the previous two is now available. If you were fortunate enough to get a ticket to Meredith Music Festival she’ll be there. She’s also taking her anecdotal, ambling vocals all around the country whilst supporting Billy Bragg on tour in March next year.
