Shows: Courtney Barnett

Back in November of 2013, we jumped on the Barnett bandwagon, praising her quirky ability to make the mundane acts of gardening and playing tennis and having panic attacks so darn colourful. Courtney Barnett has since gone on to be featured in literally a billion online zines and blogs as an ‘artist to watch’ or ‘the next big thing’ including many kind words from mainstream peasant publications Pitchfork, The Vine and Rolling Stone, so we’re pretty stoked for the opportunity to see the lady of the hour in action up here in the north-eastern states.

Tonight (Fri 17 Jan) she’ll be bringing her peculiar brand of Australiana/Melb-folk/singer-songwriter funtimes to the Alhambra Lounge in Brizzy with support/after show/I’m not sure from something called Friends. Like that band called Girls a while back, it’s nigh on impossible to find out what Friends is using the internet alone, as google searches for ‘Friends Music’ and ‘Friends Band’ result in this.

Tomorrow night (Sat 18th Jan), she’ll be hitting up the small licence venue with the strangest name in Sydney, Goodgod Small Club and Danceteria alongside Sures and Nic CasseyThe former make your common and/or garden variety guitar pop with a surf tinge but do it oh so well, while the latter is an ‘enigmatic singer-songwriter’ whose single Madness has been spinning relentlessly at my workplace – an unfortunate circumstance that makes me instantly dislike the guy. This is a completely biased and unfair opinion of a singer-songwriter who probably isn’t half bad so check him out for yourself at the link above.

Grab your tickets from Moshtix here or below and give Avant Gardener another spin. Also, email us ([email protected]) or hit up Happy on Facebook with some adjectives for ‘quirky’ or ‘unusual’ – I’m running out here!
