Your next favourite act comes in the form of two Mollymook-born sisters. CLEWS, the fresh project from Lily and Grace Richardson, have entered the music scene swinging with big choruses and sweeping harmonies that will make your heart explode.
Now, their new single Museum is riding the airwaves to a ripper response.
With touches of the anthemic ‘90s ballads CLEWS were raised on, Museum is both endearing and unapologetic.
After the release of their first single Feel was met with love both online and on radio, their new rollercoaster Museum is following suit. The track is receiving a number of spins on triple j, was added to rotation on Unearthed Radio and earned the sisters Artist Spotlight on the station.
The single is a total jam, full of chewy guitar riffs, punchy drum beats and lyrics so sharp-witted they will slice your heart strings:
“It’s Valentine’s Day, she makes you go to school. Your family loves you but it’s really not enough.”
We caught up with CLEWS, who divulged on the meaning behind Museum.
“The first part is about being born lucky, then it moves to liking the idea of being in love and the grand finale is about looking back and realising you’ve had everything you needed all along.”
On getting their start in the scene, the sisters explain; “We grew up singing harmonies together because our family is super musical, but we decided to wait until Grace finished high school and moved up to Sydney to give it a good crack as a band.”
Music is clearly a family affair for CLEWS. The band say the ability to make songs with your sister is a thrilling process, “a thousand times better than going it alone.”
“For us, singing harmonies is a buzz and it’s especially cool to have someone to dissect new song ideas with seeing as we’re basically the same person. Our Dad was in a band in his 20s with his brothers, so it’s a bit of a family blueprint too.”
Having spent the past year honing their craft in the studio and on the live circuit, CLEWS say their style has also seen a shift.
“When we decided to get a band together we didn’t have a live show at all, but we had a clear vision of what we wanted to sound like.”
“Since getting our rhythm section going and playing shows we’ve carved out our sound more and more and it’s been exciting to be making music we would listen to.”
CLEWS offer a timelessly cool track in their new single Museum. If the song is anything to go by, we can expect big things from this sister act in the near future.
