If you’re a fan of sweet male harmonies with acoustic and electronic undertones then Brisbane duo SIMON SIMON should definitely be the next addition to your playlist of I-knew-about-them-before-you-did artists. So here is the low down: their aim is to write music to ‘vibe to’, they have a strong passion for classical music and psychedelia, and they definitely fit into the more sophisticated side of Brisbane’s music scene.

Simon Simon psych rock

Classical music, electronica and psych rock may not have been intended to work together, but somehow it all does in SIMON SIMON’s delicate formula.

Joshua Rivory and Simon Svoboda are two classically trained lads who met at the University of Queensland in the heart of Brisbane. After realising their strong mutual appreciation of the same artists, such as Sigur Rós, Hiatus Kaiyote, Lior and Tame Impala, along with a plethora of classical artists and compositions, they put their talents together to make some soul infused, extremely chill electro-acoustic tunes.

If you ask the boys they will tell you their music sounds like “Sun-bleached rainbow psych rock fused with classical influence”, and I can’t say I disagree. If you need a day to lay on the beach and contemplate life in sunshine rays, Please will help carry you into a world of tranquility. If your need is to escape to a magical part of your mind with rainbows, daffodils and peace signs calmly floating by, Friends is the tune to see you through.

After Svoboda conceptualised the songs, the duo recorded Friends and Please in Rivory’s bedroom who, in Svoboda’s words, “Did his genius thing and turned the arrangements into something totally new and different.” It would seem the duo have paired themselves together perfectly.

Wasting no time at all, the songs were released in the first month of the duo being an official band. The classical undercurrent of each song is strong, and when you mix their indie rock influences into the recipe you get something a little left of field to anything else coming out of Brisbane right now.

Whilst they go through the motions of finding the right manager to fit the bill, SIMON SIMON are currently working on their next single Claude, which is based on the concepts of Debussy’s orchestral work La Mer. This will no doubt follow the same path of their very unique blend of genres, and I’m assured it will most certainly provide the vibes.

If you’re lucky enough to be basking in the Brisbane sun right now, keep your eyes peeled on your local venues because SIMON SIMON are entering the gigging scene to bring said vibes to life.
