Brody Dalle

Anyone who claims that Australia has a lacking rock-scene has obviously not heard of Melbourne girl Brody Dalle. Clearly influenced by Cindy Lauper, Joan Jett and Nirvana, Brody artistically combines these inspirations in her music, adding a vibrant edge, equal in both attitude and appeal.

My first impression of Brody Dalle arose from her no-fucking-around description on Twitter which states that she was born to “slay demons and write songs”.

You’ll know her as Josh Homme’s perfect rock partner, or as the lead singer of howlin’ punk band The Distillers. Now, she’s gone solo and released Diploid Love.

True to the description, Brody brings the myth of the rock goddess to life, as she presents an urge for rebellion that’ll make you want to scream at any figure of authority. It’s no suprise that Dalle is an ex-member and lead singer of The Distillers, the energetic and somewhat legendary rock band that characterises everything that we love about rock n roll music.

Her recent solo musical adventure is loud and chaotic. As an artist, she has grown immensely from her Distillers era and is notably moving into the exploration of experimental rock. Brody Dalle’s latest LP Diploid Love entails on one level what you might expect based on her days in The Distillers – fiery lyrics, gravely vocals and epic guitar sections.

The themes throughout Diploid Love are quite sinister and include; Blood In Gutters, Parties for Prostitutes and Brody’s clear warning Don’t Mess With Me, which is one I certainly wouldn’t challenge. Brody’s dark sense of humour resonates throughout her music and connects her to other lovable rockers such as Cherie Curie, who Brody matches perfectly in capability and approach, and fellow Aussie Shirley Manson of Garbage (check the vid above).

Also, her baby daddy and husband is Queens Of The Stone Age/Them Crooked Vultures rock king Josh Homme. What a pair. Becoming a mother hasn’t softened Dalle who maintains her haunting rock edge, despite having to attend to what she calls her “little humans.”

You can bet your Converses and tattoo ink that she’ll staying true to the dark side, and here at Happy we can’t wait to see more of her solo work in the future.
