We need to change our national slogan (if we don’t have one already) to “Fuck it’s fucking cold“, because you can’t start a conversation or scroll through your social media feed without coming into contact with the phrase. We’re sun worshippers, always have been and always will be. These chilly mists just don’t agree with our beach going, barbecuing, true blue Aussie ways, and it’s fascinating to see our people shrink away in the cold.

The cure for these bitter, grumpy cold months? Music people, glorious sweaty music. So why not revisit one of the most sweat inducing albums to come out in the last year, Summer from Grenadiers.

Grenadiers BIGSOUND

Feeling chilly? Get toasty to Grenadiers and Summer, one of the best rock albums to come out this year. Frantic punk rock at its best.

The Adelaide three piece can be summed up in two words; punk and rock. That’s about all you need to know really. These boys cut through the shit with ten guitar bangers on Summer with delectable riffs and shouty vocals. Whether you’re moshing at their live show or moshing in your bedroom, you’re guaranteed to give the winter chills the flick.

Their sophomore album, Summer came kicking and screaming into the world in January. It was naked covered in sweat and blood, and by God it was beautiful. The thing with punk rock albums is that they rarely have the capacity to last much longer than a few months. It’s in the nature of the music; it moves quickly while flipping both birds and giving zero fucks. It’s brilliant but means many punk albums lack staying power, only to be revisited through nostalgia. Summer is a welcome exception.

Let’s make this clear first off; this album rocks. It kicks down your door and with that same kick follows through with landing a swift one to your berries, followed by eating your lunch and seducing your mum. It’s killer. The title track opens up the album, it’s a blistering frenzy of guitars, cymbals and throaty vocals. The intensity doesn’t let up for a moment, Fractotum and Handfuls of Dirt in particular really drive it home.

Stay Inside marks the halfway point and typically slows things down to give everyone a breather. Still the band don’t let up for a moment. It may be a slow burn song but the intensity is still there bubbling beneath the surface before raising it’s head once more for the song’s crescendo. What is usually the bathroom break song manages to be one of Summer‘s highlights, and it’s feverish energy primes you for the thrashing second half.

The riffs are aggressive, the drums are pounded by a man possessed, and vocals dance between screaming, shouting and harsh melodies. Summer is without a doubt one of the most rocking Aussie albums of 2015, and although it was released some six months ago it is still worth your time. It’s an explosion disguised as an album. If that sounds like the kind of thing that get’s you hot and heavy be sure to check out one of Australia’s best rock bands at this year’s stellar BIGSOUND.
