Blow your 15-year-old mind with this teeny tiny cassette player which fits in your hand

Back in the 90s the world was transfixed by the dream that one day, music would fit in the palm of your hand. Walkmans, mp3 players and portable cassette players all strove for this goal, until the iPod blew it out of the water.

Since the idea has become more commonplace, designers and engineers have all but stopped striving for tininess where vinyl, cassettes and CDs are concerned (despite one or two exceptions). Enter ELBOW, a bare-bones take on the cassette player which is already grabbing itself some design awards.

Tinier than you thought possible and cuter than a tape player has ever been, the ELBOW cassette player is ‘just the arm’.

Containing a single pulley within its arm and a simple, circular control panel, the ELBOW has everything you need in a player. The speed of the pulley is controlled by an optical sensor and an internal motor.

Streaming’s recent dominance is revitalising the world’s love affair with analogue formats, and alongside vinyl’s resurgence cassette tape sales nearly doubled in 2016. Hopefully the ELBOW is just the beginnings of far more innovation to come.
