Will Canberra ever stop with the goodness? Azim Zain and His Lovely Bones have everything we want

After a a number of years grinding through the live scene in Canberra and few small tours, Azim Zain and His Lovely Bones have released a pretty phenomenal EP.

For fans of The Smith Street Band, The Middle East and Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, this is an act which you just can’t ignore.

Azim Zain and His Lovely Bones

Warm and infectious, Between Who We Are and Who We Used To Be swells with honest, rich vocals, and with delicate, beautiful instrumentation.

After just the first track of their record Between Who We Are and Who We Used To Be, I was sending the link left right and centre to mates who I knew would dig their sound.

There are hints of complexity, but mostly what you will get from Azim Zain and His Lovely Bones is a sigh of relief. Their sound is so brilliant, bold and bright that it’s a record you can listen to in the car on the way to work as much as you could on a lazy Saturday morning.

The five track EP is dominated by Zain’s own vocals with an occasional interjection from the lead female. Without giving too much away track three Dreams I Could Recall concludes in the most unexpectedly gorgeous way, and you will be left begging for more.

These are artists with more than just a sonic scope, their lyrical capability and poetic prowess is overwhelming.

Between Who We Are and Who We Used To Be dips its toes into such a wide soundscape, injecting rock, folk, blues and little tastes of pop throughout the whole record, often more than once in a song. You are left wanting for nothing and yet yearning for more.

If these guys are playing the next time I am in Canberra, or indeed wherever I am, theirs is a show I refuse to miss.
