Archers

If The Smiths had a cousin who had grandchildren, I’d imagine it’s music would sound like these guys. And is it just me, or is there more and more solid music coming out of Adelaide? Better keep an eye out on the sneaky southerners.

Adelaide keeps pumping out the tracks, doesn’t it? This time, its just little outfit Archers with their incredibly catchy tune Nobodies.

Archers are many things – from indie rock, to psychedelic ambient post punk – this experienced five piece have some big shows under their belt so you know you’re dealing with the real thing here, people.

They’ve played festivals such as Big Day Out and have supported other Aussie acts like DZ Deathrays and Alpine (I’m now sorry Archers that I didn’t turn up earlier to these gigs to hear you guys). They toured earlier this year around Australia promoting their singles around the eastern seaboard.

When I listen to Archers, I envision it’s like looking through a kaleidoscope at a bunch of stoplights changing colours in a moving car. These guys are talented musicians who hit the mark when it comes to tunes… just like an archer. Duh. Yeah I went there (my dad would be proud).

Archers show off their strong technical guitar prowess with intricate riffs and echoing delayed tones in their track Nobodies. It’s melancholy, with looming vocals and instrumentation that works seamlessly together.

In their more recent release Long Now, you can hear more of the same complex guitars and their classic darker psychedelic echoes. They demonstrate strong dynamics with an explosive ending to blaring guitars, crashing guitars and prolonged vocals to a sudden stop – having great effect.

Archers’ earlier stuff is quite good too, catching their earlier rock, indie pop style with tracks such as Scout or Cranes in their EP What Birds Think. It’s more poppy and happy – all round more accessible for people who need to warm up to these guys, so take a crack at listening to that first if this is your first time Archers experience.
