Alumni from Studio Ghibli have banded together to form Studio Ponoc, and you can watch their first trailer here

With Studio Ghibli splintering into more and more different pieces, it’s damn reassuring to know that members from the Japanese animation collective will still be creating their works of art together.

Studio Ponoc has emerged from the ashes of Ghibli, with Hiromasa Yonebayashi and Yoshiaki Nishimura leading the team as director and producer respectively.

Watch the stunning new trailer for Mary and the Witch’s Flower, the first film from Studio Ghibli splinter group Studio Ponoc.

Studio Ponoc includes a huge cohort of ex-Ghibli employees, and the studio’s style is super obvious in their first trailer. The hand-painted pastel backdrops are back, along with the unbelievably expressive characters and magical realism Ghibli was founded on.

Mary and the Witch’s Flower tells the story of a young girl named Mary who is taken to witch’s school after finding a magical broomstick. Sounds pretty damn good to us.

The film is due out in the tail end of 2017, and you can watch the trailer below:
