Alae are turning heads with their newest single, Stone Cold, which has recently been added to Spotify’s New Music Friday playlist (AU, NZ, and US). It’s no question the track had already made waves, as its sure to melt the stoniest and coldest of hearts.

This head-bop jam is great for a walk in the park, and perfect for that iconic, outdoor dance scene in (500) Days of Summer.

Evolving from their initial folk sound, Stone Cold shows a funkier version of Alae that’s never been seen before.

The range of stylistic influences Alae create are rich in flavour where elements of alternative, jazz, ska, funk and pop are present.

Beginning with an intro reminiscent of a jazzed-up version of Phoenix’s masterpiece, Love Like a Sunset, Alex Farrell-Davey’s crooning voice paints a soothing atmosphere. The chorus changes tone in a bipolar, swift and effortless manner, with the accompaniments of trumpet, piano, bass and drums, correctly expressing the high when it comes to falling in love.

As Farrell-Davey confidently sings, “There’s all these things that I want to do with you by my side. For the first time in my entire life, well, I don’t mind”, you can’t help but feel all the feels  and let love take over.

“Stone Cold is a celebration of the complexities of new love and the conflicting emotions that arise,” Alae shared.

“Love is a consuming and confronting high – it can alter your perspective on everything. Once the hit sinks in, paranoia and the second guessing begins.”

Alae are set to release their debut album this coming June, after waiting forever since the band began two years ago. After receiving a grant from NZ On Air Music, the trio spent the last three months recording with co-producer Jol Mullholland in Auckland’s LAB Studios.

Stone Cold is out now.
