Political provocateurs Pussy Riot to headline Adelaide Fringe Fest 2019

Three of the key members of the world’s leading political resistance group Pussy Riot will perform in Australia for the very first time as the headline act for Adelaide’s massive annual Fringe Festival.

In what has been described as a world first, the trio will perform exclusively at Adelaide’s Royal Croquet Club for one week only. As well as a stage performance, Pussy Riot will also perform their art piece Riot Days at The Royal Croquet Club’s The Attic venue.

21st-century icons of political resistance Pussy Riot may not be warmly received in their own country, but Australia has welcomed them with open arms.

Infamous for their political antics, Pussy Riot have been in the media spotlight since the controversial protest at the Moscow Cathedral back in 2012. Most recently, the group made headlines for undertaking a large-scale protest at the World Cup Final between France and Croatia, where four members ran onto the field during the second half of the match.

Royal Croquet Club artistic director David Sefton said of the announcement:

“The show is great and their live performance is extraordinary and they’re something of a 21st-Century icon of political resistance.”

The Adelaide Fringe Festival program dropped today, and next year the festival will be bigger and better than ever. 2019 will play host to over 1300 events (you read that right), almost one hundred more than the program held last year.

With 13 genres of performances including comedy, music, theatre, cabaret, visual art and design, children’s events, circus and physical theatre, dance, interactive, magic, film and digital, plus workshops and talks, no fringe-dweller will ever get bored.

The Adelaide Fringe Festival runs for over a month in early 2019, from February 15 to March 17. For full program details, head over to the Adelaide Fringe website.
