A new study reveals that male critics give lower reviews to films made by women

A new study released by The Center for the Study of Women in Television and Film titled Film Critics and Gender, and Why it Matters, has said that male critics give lower reviews to films made by women.

The study has revealed that women gave an average rating of 74% to films with women in leading roles, while men only gave 62%.

In some depressing and not-so-surprising news, it has been revealed that male film critics give lower reviews to films made by women.

So, could this just mean men are generally harsher critics than women? Eh, probably not.

These gender imbalances matter because they impact the visibility of films with female protagonists and/or women directors, as well as the nature of reviews,” says project director Dr. Martha Lauzen.

The data came from over four-thousand reviews, written by 241 different people for print, broadcast, and digital.

Lauzen’s report also found that women are more likely to review films directed by and starring women, and mention the names of female directors.
