A massive David Bowie tribute is coming featuring Car Seat Headrest, Billy Corgan, Spoon and more

We’ve seen our fair share of tributes to the great David Bowie since we lost him in January 2016.

From an hour-long surrealist homage by Soulwax, to Iggy Pop, Thurston Moore, Connan Mockasin and more taking part weekend-long radio tribute, artists around the world have found some incredible ways to express their gratitude to the unsurpassable influence of The Starman.

Howard Stern has announced a massive David Bowie tribute this Friday night, featuring Car Seat Headrest, Billy Corgan, Spoon and more.

Legendary radio host, Howard Stern has now announced his own tribute, enlisting the likes of Car Seat Headrest, Billy Corgan, Britt Daniel from Spoon, Garbage, Peter Frampton and heaps more to perform their favourite Bowie tracks on his SiriusXM satellite radio show this Friday night, at 10pm E.T.

“I’ve been listening to this special for about two weeks… it’s killer,” Stern said earlier in the week while previewing some of the tracks from the special. “You’ve got some great bands, some new bands, some classic bands.”

The tribute will be hosted by Bowie’s longtime producer Tony Visconti and will featuring 25 artists in total performing their favourite cuts from his discography.

“It was my pleasure to make about half of his albums with him and what was even better was that he was my personal friend as well,” Visconti said of his relationship with Bowie. “And I’m glad we can share these fantastic interpretations of his songs. There is no end to how they can be interpreted.”

“This project is very ambitious because David Bowie songs are not easy to play and sing for technical reasons,” Visconti added. “But everyone who participated in this rose to the occasion.”

Some of the highlights from the tribute that we’re most excited for include Billy Corgan’s cover of Space Oddity, of which he said: “[The track] wasn’t necessarily one of my favorites of David’s, and after his passing I found myself drawn to the alienating lyric the song, and singing it each night became my own personal way of mourning his loss.”

We’re also excited to hear what Car Seat Headrest do with Ashes to Ashes.

“Bowie’s repertoire is so vast that there’s always something great that you haven’t heard yet,” the band’s frontman/mastermind, Will Toledo explained. “I started playing an acoustic version of ‘Ashes to Ashes’ around the house a few years ago. My roommate eventually asked me to record it. The song is constantly evolving into something new as it goes through its different passages, so I tried to match that in the production here.”
