Nirvana demo tapes

A friend of Kurt Cobain has shared four videos containing material from rare Nirvana demo tapes from the late 80s. Listen below!

John Purkey, a musician based in Washington, U.S, says Cobain personally gave him the tapes, which contain over two hours of material including demos for songs that featured on Bleach and Nevermind, and a video containing some interesting backstory about the band, the tapes and Purkey’s relationship with Cobain.

As SPIN note, one of the tapes includes Bleach demos from Nirvana’s first ever studio session in 1988 at Reciprocal Studios in Seattle, with Melvins drummer Dale Crover on the drums.

Others feature Nevermind demos recorded with Chad Channing, the short-lived replacement for Crover who was replaced by Dave Grohl during the album’s inception.

Many of these demos, particularly those for songs that featured on Nirvana albums, have already been released on compilations released after Cobain’s death such as Incesticide, but it’s pretty awesome hearing where they came from and the backstory behind the tapes.
