A true troubadour at heart, Riley Pearce walks the wanderer’s road on his Outside The Lines EP. Husky, raw and honest, what more could you ask for?
Pearce’s newly released EP Outside The Lines is the perfect traveler’s soundtrack, a poetic collection of travel stories and easy listening tunes to make any lengthy road trip enjoyable. The EP was inspired by Pearce’s six month adventure through Montana, recorded with Andy Lawson at Debaser Studios. The 23 year-old’s songwriting reflects his deep desire to explore and gives audiences a unique perception of the world through traveler’s eyes.
The album artwork perfectly foreshadows the indie-folk sounds that are to come, a transparent artist and his guitar, filled with the colours of the ocean and the sky. The first song from the EP and the leading single, Brave, is exactly that: simple, clean guitar and a husky, honest voice revealing dense emotion.
Almost Ziggy Alberts-esque, this grounded, acoustic tone remains consistent throughout the album, reflecting Pearce’s authenticity as an artist. Added brass instruments add a unique flavour, colouring the lyrics with a worldly essence.
A little more stripped back, 406 is a soothing intermission-like tune, purely instrumental. The song is less than two minutes long, however its peaceful guitar picking and tranquility is the perfect inclusion to this chilled EP. Outside The Lines then picks up the pace, the pulsating guitar rhythm uplifting yet subtle. This traveler’s love song will fill your heart with happiness, dramatic drum intervals, electric guitar riffs and a dipping harmony pumping summer through your veins.
If you can’t feel the salty ocean splashing in your face by now, then Seasick will be sure to take you there! Despite its sickly title, this tune is full of ocean and ship themed metaphors; the rhythm’s swaying like the tide itself. Pearce’s effortless, almost sleepy vocals slip into a crisp falsetto, showing off the intricacies of his folk tone. The final songs on the EP, Roskie, The Long Road and Circles, continue to take you on a summery journey, cymbal crashes and faster spoken lyrics kicking up the tempo to finish the album on a high.
Pearce is an artist to keep your eyes on, having received a nomination for AU Review’s WA Best Male Vocals Award in 2015. He has supported big time acts such as Kim Churchill and Josh Pyke, however his new EP could be what lands him centre stage!
