10 Strayan musicians bringing a bit of hip hop into it: a list by the Surfshirts of Winston

Winston Surfshirt have been kicking around for a while, jabbing at ya ears with the old slice of sultry, slinky hip hop whenever they get the chance, but it’s their latest track Be About You which taken the boys from Sydney to the world.

Bustlip, The Bone, Bik Julio, Mi-K and Dool are the men behind the music, five warbling wizards with a lusher palate than most. Since they’ve slung their coastal Aussie hip hop across the pond, we asked each of the 5 members to provide us with a pair of tasty artists who are doing the same.

Hungry for a sprinkling of Aussie hip hop? Ask and ye shall receive, so we asked the salty swashbucklers of Winston Surfshirt for their 10 faves.

Mi-K

Jonti / Danimals

Jonti’s genuine, authentic. He doesn’t give concessions, instead bending towards authenticity in an industry where the most popular of music generally lacks courage. It’s mad. I respect it a lot.

Moreover his music is tight, and he’s the only Australian artist (to our knowledge) signed to Stones Throw Records, a label we all massively respect for its forward thinking attitude, artist base and history of releases. Check him out.

Mohi

I’ve got no idea who this guy is. Mohi uploads mini audio-videos of his beats to his Instagram page, and they’re slippery as can be.

Ayo, I just found his Soundcloud. Oh dang, Real Shit on the Escape From The Savage EP is delish. Who are you, man?

Bustlip

Moonbase

I’ve known of Moonbase for a few years now, going back to when I used to play in a band called Chicks Who Love Guns. Playing on the same line up at Yours and Owls (now Rad Bar) in Wollongong, I was so stoked back then to see someone killing it on the SP404 like he does!

Since day dot his tunes have always been impressive and nothing has changed, having come out with his EP Orthodox and his recent single It Don’t Matter featuring Anderson .Paak (which absolutely knocks by the way. It’ll push ya hairline back.) Much respect to a talent who’s been hard at it since way back.

Slim Set

I trust my ol’ mate Cass Navarro. For years now he’s always been one step ahead on quality up-and-coming music so when he put those little white earbuds in to show me Nomad by Slim Set, I knew there would be no exception.

For me Slim Set stands outside the circle of beats/hip hop that I’d been hearing in Syd for quite a while, and in ways reflecting some of my favourite DIY producers and rappers from NY and the UK. Dirty, gritty, electronic and definitely worth checking when they play the next dripping wet basement club near you.

The Bone

Koi Child

Size matters. Who doesn’t love seeing a big band playing live hip hop? I was blown away by Koi Child when I was lucky enough to catch them last year in Sydney. They’ve got great energy on stage and their music is dripping with those neo-soul and jazz influences. One to watch for me.

Plus they got horns…can’t go wrong with that.

Sampa The Great

Sampa is straight up FIRE. She’s absolutely killing it. One of my favourite artists doing their thing right now. She’s got mad rhythm and flow. She’s got the attitude. Plus the love for what she’s doing, and believes in, always comes across in her tunes.

Mix that with those Godriguez beats and you’ve got the perfect cocktail. If you’ve been living under a rock, do yourself a favour and check it out.

Bik Julio

Swooping duck

Got a chance to catch these guys live down in Melbourne. Playing mixtures of neo soul, jazz and hip hop influenced instrumentals, they’re amazing to watch live. Plus the dudes bass playing is tight AF! A big standout amongst a band of equally genius musicians.

Jams that make you pull that face when you smell a fart and kinda dig it.

Remi

Really dig this guy’s music. Remi’s latest track Lose Sleep featuring Jordan Rakei is dope, the music behind it has strong D’Angelo/Dilla vibes. Such a tune!

Dool

Baro

Been really into Baro ever since I saw him at Astral People’s 5th b’day with his live band, think it was his first gig with a full band too. They were amazing live, he had the whole crowd doing their ting. His lazy flow has got me all ooooooweeeee! Ive been spreading the word since.

Vulture Street Tape Gang

These guys make the phattest beats! Some of the tidiest musicians I’ve seen. I would definitely have them in my cantina bar or jabbas palace! Check them out, some of the nicest beats I’ve heard come out of Australia in a while.

Winston Surfshirt are launching Be About You at the Newtown Social Club on March 25th, but we hate to say it’s sold out! You’ll have to bribe your way in.
