What do you see in this photograph? A giant barbie or tiny street?

Ok this blew our minds so much we couldn’t not post it. What do you see in this picture? A giant barbie or tiny street? Or some baffling combination of both?

Michael John Hunter

Michael John Hunter photographs giant sculptures outside in a way that “fakes macro photography” – aka boggles the mind.

It’s actually a giant barbie – a part of a ongoing series by photographer/mind-fucker Michael John Hunter. His work plays with the concept of perception in a totally unique way, using rather traditional camera techniques and giant, strategically placed sculptures to play with the mind.

As It’s Nice That note, his work is inspired by hyperreal sculpture, miniature art and artists like Ron Mueck, Lori Nix and Slinkach, as well as old school camera techniques:

“I was obsessed with large format film cameras and the way you could skew focus with them,” he says. “I use these old cameras that have an ability to make the focus seem unnatural and allow me to trick the viewer. It’s basically ‘tilt shift’ photography done in-camera, not post. I guess I’m interested in purism in art, I like traditional techniques.”

The sculptures, which also include a large blue bottle fly, are up to 20ft high, and are strategically shot at night from specific angles using a focus technique that Michael says “fakes macro photography.”

Check out insane the series below. Also look at the ‘making of’ video for a completely different perspective.
