Watch a man play the Beatles on guitar while getting a tumour removed from his brain

The Beatles’ Yesterday is one of the most covered songs of all time, but none have ever been as weird as this: Anthony Kulkamp Dias, a 33 year old Brazilian bank worker, played the tune while getting a tumour removed from his brain.

Watch a Brazilian man play the Beatles’ Yesterday while undergoing surgery to remove a tumour – from his brain.

Yep. For real.

“I played six songs at certain times,” he told a Brazilian website after the successful surgery. “My right hand was a bit weaker because that was the side that they were operating on. So I stopped and rested. I was interspersing songs and talking with them.”

During his rendition of Yesterday he sings lazily, strumming a simplified version of the tune while resting the guitar on his stomach.

Dias underwent innovative surgery in 2015 that allowed doctors to safely map the awake patient’s brain – a technique that helps prevent injuries during the operation. “By keeping [him] awake during surgery, these areas can be monitored in real time,” said Dr. Jean Abreu Machado, clinical director for Nossa Senhora da Conceição hospital. “It really is a great challenge for the whole surgery team, including the anesthetist.”
