Funkmeisters Vaudeville Smash are a straight-up sexual five piece hailing from Melbourne. A couple of years back, their hit Zinedine Zidane went viral, amassing over four million views on Youtube.
They’ve recently unveiled their new single Laura, a hit packed with staccato flutes, slap-heavy bass lines and the rare singing drummer. The funkiness of the tune is only outweighed by it’s video, and as the first taste of their upcoming album The Gift, you have every reason to be excited.
Vaudeville Smash walked straight out of the 70s pop into Australia’s funk scene, so whack on those flairs and catch these disco jives live.
To accompany the release of their single and forthcoming album, Vaudeville Smash are travelling the nation’s east coast. In a tour jam-packed with a few free gigs and a smattering of all ages shows, there’s going to be something for everyone.
Laura is the story of a remorseless man-eating machine of a woman, both ruthless and sexy beyond all mortal comprehension. The accompanying video sees dancer Shivawn Joubert as the fictional Laura, dancing through a smoky nightclub as the band does their best to retain our attention behind her.
An apt accompaniment to such stimulating subject matter, the song itself is a tasty disco tour-de-force. Refusing to follow classic song structure, the tune is entertaining start to finish, jumping from bridge to bridge. The rhythm section lays down a terrific booshie groove that will send audiences twisting in a live show.
