Twin vocals, surfer vibes and punk vitriol: see double with Sweet, the latest track from Birdhouse

Melbourne-based punk rockers Birdhouse return with the first tasty treat from their forthcoming EP.

The single is Sweet both in name and sonics. The track puts on show the band’s handy guitar work, strong and steady percussion fills and explosive vocals from dream duo Danny Smith and Pat Stanton.

Not a single noise from Birdhouse sounds contrived or overly influenced, just relatable tunes carrying an essence which is uniquely and proudly Aussie.

Sweet was written about the darker side of travelling that most people avoid sharing” lead guitarist Nick Tamiakis says.

“We aimed to write a song that would cover a broad range of genres, while still maintaining musical credibility by adding somewhat unconventional riff structures”

And cover a broad range of genres it does, the initially rough and raw vocals melding perfectly into some pretty tight percussion, flirting with the line between full-blown punk-rock and beautifully laid-back surfer pop.

The tussle between the two vocalists through some pretty self-reflective lyrics is what makes this track particularly special, and adds an additional element of true Australiana to the music they release.

“Our EP will hopefully show an interesting range of styles – the four songs are pretty different from each other,” said Smith, bass player and half of the vocal duo.

“One of the few things that Sweet and the other tracks have in common though lyric-wise, is an element of anxiety, self-consciousness and regret.”

Their last single Bitter earned Birdhouse some overwhelmingly positive attention, something which was certainly not lost on the guys.

“It’s awesome to see people get around our tracks. It means a lot and it’s comforting knowing that our hard work is paying off and is being enjoyed by others”

As if these musos weren’t busy enough penning an EP packed with thought-provoking steering wheel tappers, they’re playing plenty of dates across Victoria throughout the summer – including a spot on the bill at Beyond the Valley.

“We’re looking forward to playing in front of brand new crowds and sharing the love with more people,” Pat says “We can’t wait to let loose, party and see some ripper bands tear it up alongside us”.

For those of you in The Garden State, these fellas are launching this cracking single on Friday. Be at Yah Yah’s at 8pm for a thrummin’ good time. Details here.
