The Edge: An animated homage to Hunter S. Thompson’s famous musings on the line between life and death

In 2012, author Will Bingley and illustrator Anthony Hope-Smith released Gonzo: A Graphic Biography of Hunter S. Thompson, a graphic novel featuring a striking monochrome visual aesthetic – a style which visual artist Piotr Kabat appropriated for another homage to Thompson, a short animation called the EDGE.

The edge

Watch a short animation based off Hunter S. Thompson’s musings about the line between life and death, and those who are too cautious to cross it.

Kabat’s animation is based off an excerpt from the 2010 film Gonzo: The Life and Work of Dr. Hunter S. Thompson, narrated by Johnny Depp.

The title and focus of the animation come from one of Thompson’s most famous quotes, from the 1966 nonfiction novel Hell’s Angels: The Strange and Terrible Saga of the Outlaw Motorcycle Gangs, which discusses the line between life and death, and those who are too cautious to cross it.

This is how the excerpt reads:

“The ‘Edge’. There is no honest way to explain it because the only people who really know where it is are the ones who have gone over. The others — the living — are those who pushed their luck as far as they felt they could handle it, and then pulled back, or slowed down or did whatever they had to when it came time to choose between Now and Later. But the edge is still out there.”
