Can’t shell out $1000 for the original pressing? The Akira score is finally being reissued on vinyl

This September, the score to 1988’s cyberpunk cult classic Akira will be reissued on vinyl for the very first time.

The retrograde Japanese masterpiece is still lauded as a cornerstone of animated film, not to mention partial inspiration for a healthy chunk of modern sci-fi including Blade Runner, Star Wars and 2001: A Space Odyssey.

Akira soundtrack vinyl reissue 1988 score

Dr. Shoji Yamashiro of the Geinoh Yamashirogumi collective’s Akira score will be reissued on vinyl this September for the first time since 1988.

The score was originally pressed following the film’s cinematic release back in 1988, and copies from that cohort have attained such a rarity that it’s not out of the ordinary to see them surpass $1000 listings on Discogs.

The Yamashirogumi collective, comprising hundreds of Japanese composers, pieced together the soundtrack before the film was produced. The animations were then set to the score, puzzled together with frame-by-frame perfection.
