Sydney’s Marriage Equality rally breaks national records as crowds tip 30,000

Sydney was glowing yesterday as upwards of 30,000 people took to the streets in support of marriage equality. Taking over Elizabeth Street, the rally was addressed by Labor Leader Bill Shorten and Deputy Labor Leader Tanya Plibersek.

More than 30,000 supporters took to the streets in Sydney for Marriage Equality, a record breaking rally within Australia.

Addressing the crowd, Shorten had the following to say:

“I’m sorry that the Parliament has not already resolved this matter. I’m sorry for all of the hurtful and stupid things which have been said and are going to be said until we win marriage equality.”

“I’m sorry to all LBGTIQ Australians because we have one more mountain to climb, but we will climb it together.”

Plibersek followed on:

“It’s not just about the love between two people, it’s about the love that everyone in this crowd has for every other Australian. I’ve got constituents of mine who have been together for 60 years – they deserve to get married if they want to.”

The day was beautifully punctuated by the magnificent Alex The Astronaut, giving a heartwarming performance of her latest single Not Worth Hiding.

While there was speculation as to what impact a rally such as Sunday’s would have, it seemed that the event brought Sydney together under one banner of equality and acceptance. With registrations for voting now done and dusted, the next step is ensuring that everyone gets voting and submits their YES as quickly as possible.

The day wrapped up nicely as Newtown’s music festival King Street Crawl brought everyone together through a celebration of new music and community.
