Stuart Coupe knows a thing or two when it comes to the ins and outs of being a manager. He’s worked with the likes Paul Kelly, Dallas Crane and the Hoodoo Gurus to name a few, not to mention has earned a mantle as a highly respected journalist and author. So when he jumped on board to write an article for Happy’s first issue we were more than thrilled.
“Over the course of that time I’ve often been asked about artist management and I’ve maintained the same position for three decades – it’s one of the most thankless tasks in the music business. I go on to point that if anyone is wondering what it’s like to be an artist manager just imagine what it’s like running a 24-hour-a-day child-minding centre.”
The previous passage is taken from Coupe’s article The Ties That Bind, a look into the relationship between artists and their managers. Drawing from his own experiences, this complex and oft never seen relationship is one that goes far beyond just baby sitting a bunch of creative types. If you’re a budding musician or looking to be try your hand in artist management, The Ties That Bind are the words of wisdom you need to read.
