Shows: Port Royal Street Party

Dammit Melbourne! You and your little brick alleyways, your microbrewed beers, your gourmet hamburgers and your awesome music scene. When you read about stuff like the Port Royal Street Party, you get the feeling we up here* just can’t compete, y’know? Except then you read that it’s gonna hit 41 degrees* down there today and realise it’s not all Fat Yaks and fancy haircuts.

Port Royal Street Party

This Saturday the 18th of Jan, the lovely tenants of Fennell Street are teaming up with Matilda Bay (beers), Uncle Rocco (haircuts), Huxtaburger & Uncle (eats) and a whole host of rad bands to open the street up to the public for the Port Royal Street Party. Port Royal Rum and Wine tobacco are not official sponsors, but I have a feeling that there will be many Port Royals smoked over the course of the day.

Headlined by 80’s Aus-punk pioneers Cosmic Psychos and The Meanies, the real gems of the lineup are in the support slots. Garage rockers The Murlocs, noisy kids Straight Arrows and Melbourne’s premier purveyors of beverage smashing tunes Drunk Mums round out the middle order in what quickly shapes up to be the summer festival we’ve all been waiting for. Don’t bother washing those ripped black jean shorts just yet, because there’s more. So much more.

Starting at 11am, there’s plenty more room for punk-influenced guitar kids – get in early to sip on a pre-noon beer to the sounds of Ausmuteants – a band we’ve been looking to cover here for a long time. With lunch provided, there’s no need to duck home for a bite, so enjoy a burger and another bevvie with the darker waves of The Spinning Rooms, then head back to the bar and get two so you can see the all-caps frustration of BATPISS. By this time, you’ll have run into old mate, who’s bought you a beer or two and drag him along to see Harmony, who’ll bring a choral element to a day of heavy guitars and broken zildjian 16″ers (or Paistes more likely. Any drum nerds read Happy?)

As mentioned above, street festivities will kick off at 11am and tix are gonna set you back a mere $50 – that’s five bucks a band. Remember to stay hydrated throughout the event (beer is like 90% water, right?) and always obey the #1 rule of festival activities: don’t be a dickhead.

*FYI Happy is Sydney based however we don’t assume all our readers are. Peace x
