Rolling Blackouts talk us through their killer EP Talk Tight

Rolling Blackouts have been going from strength to strength in recent months. They make music that is pure golden-age Australiana guitar pop, The Go-Betweens and The Church with a modern lo-fi jangle twang. Their new EP Talk Tight is a magnificent collection of all things that make them a great band; blunt vocal delivery and sunny melodies bashed and battered into a beautifully ugly pop package. Their EP launch in Melbourne was packed to the brim, and they’ve just been announced to support The Preatures on the Victorian leg of their forthcoming ‘Cruel’ Tour. We were lucky enough to get the boys to talk us through the EP in all its glory.

Wither With You

This song came from the last page of an autobiography I read called Victories of Failure. The guy had gone totally bust and was about to lose his marriage as well. He got down on his knees and begged his wife not to leave him – nothing like a bit of rock bottom hope. The music came quickly – it’s what Paul Kelly would call a “circle song”. Lyrics a little later. I sing the lyrics I wrote for the song, and Tom sings his.

Wide Eyes

Joe wrote this one and sings it. It’s about infatuation, sun and Sydney. For me the song captures that feeling when you’ve got a day off and it is a cracking day. Walking out the door, sun beating down. Coffee first? Yep let’s do it.

Heard You’re Moving

I wrote this one. It’s about a little kid finding out his girl pal is moving towns. This big shot little kid has his heart broken and starts carrying on like a pork chop. I think it’s funny how kids think they’re big deals, but really have no control over anything!

Clean Slate

This is another one Tom and I wrote. The song is about an old world entrepreneur who had his finger in every pie. He hits setbacks, keeps going, and then comes totally unstuck. The song came into its own when we brought it to the band. Joe suggested we sit on the G for a while, which just felt right. For the outro verse, someone suggested we throw in the “still!” a la Still Dre (sorry/thanks Dre).

Tender Is The Neck

This is one of Joe’s. From what I can tell, it’s about two people spending time apart / time together. It’s totally changed since the demo. It was a nifty little nugget. Then Tom and Joe started carving out these leads. Now it’s 3D, more of a heavy hitter. We were lucky enough to have good friend Annabel (Oh Mercy and Andre) come in and sing some parts on this one.
