A restroom sign from another planet: Dunedin theatre takes a positive step towards transgender rights

Being pigeon-holed into a specific gender identity is now a thing of the past, and a New Zealand theatre is revolutionising this in the loudest and proudest way possible.

The sign, which was installed with the intention to make people feel more comfortable and safe, has so far not received any negative feedback, signifying societies growing acceptance towards gender identities.

Based on New Zealand’s beautiful south island, Dunedin is making a name for itself in accepting non-gender specific identities. With schools in the area recently making uniform options gender neutral, the Regent Theatre was quick to jump on the transgender rights bandwagon.

A week after a school went ahead with this alternative option, the Regent Theatre decided to make its restrooms open to anyone, of any gender.

Check out the sign below:

Abilities, gender, identity and aliens alike are all welcome within the restroom, according to a newly installed sign on the theatre’s bathroom door. With the classic disabled, female and male iconic bathroom signs it was refreshing to see a fourth sign which was a mix between the two genders. Add an alien in and the sign is complete, with the words ‘Whatever, just please wash your hands’ underneath.

Installed at the 1650 seat theatre last Friday, the sign has since received positive feedback with locals taking to social media to congratulate the Regent and Sarah Anderson, the theatre director and forward thinking woman behind the pro-transgender rights design.
