PREMIERE: Stormy psych outfit Sofala release new single Tempest, a layer cake of taste explosions

Sofala have dropped new single Tempest, and it’s pretty damn seductive.

Having already taken on local and interstate festivals including Party in the Paddock alongside Psychedelic Porn Crumpets and Carl Renshaw, this six piece are showing no signs of slowing down.

Tempest is moody and complex with a hardy blues vein running through it. A swirling track that takes you in a number of different directions, the low, humming vocals are carried on by some pretty far out keys and drums.

Hearing Tempest, the newest track from Sofala, one can’t help but let their mind jump to Jim Morrison’s poetic mumblings, deep and unlimited.

With no doubt in our minds that Sofala tears their live set apart, the question to be answered was whether, with such an experimental and free-formed sound, this could be translated to the studio. After hearing Tempest, it seems that there’s nothing these guys can’t do.

Warm and rounded, the production on this one is anything but amateur. Recorded at Collarts in Melbourne by Andy Richards, we can be assured that any EP these guys might be working on will turn out as solid gold.

Perfectly blending psych pop with shredding guitar and drums, Sofala are branching into an exciting space in alt rock, and for that we salute them.

There’s a bit of everything for everyone, engaging distinctly in dreamscape qualities but not skipping the bold lyricism, Sofala touching on the ever-relevant angst and confusion;

“Being held under water / As I try to go faster”

Yet Melbourne is only the beginning. With shows mapped out supporting Slim Jefferies on their Bad Behaviour tour, Sofala will be hitting up Canberra and Sydney in June. Not to be passed over, Sofala’s single Tempest is enthralling, expansive and well worth your time, this is sure to be just the beginning.
