PREMIERE: Magnets enlist a gang of derby skaters for their joyous new clip Lonely

Making the world move from their home base in Melbourne, it’s safe to say Magnets have had a running start. Enjoying airplay on the nation’s biggest stations, new local fans every day and plenty of streaming love to boot, the only direction this project is going is up.

Their latest single Lonely is proof. A lyrical number with its heart and sonics firmly rooted in emotional 90s pop, it sees Siobhan McGinnity take full flight as a budding songwriter.

A dynamite single needs a clip, so today Magnets are unveiling their second. The accompaniment to Lonely  is as bright and alluring as the song itself, and steeped in the same retro love.

Rippling with reverent nostalgia and filled to the brim with pop refinement, Magnets have proved their prowess yet again in their new clip Lonely.

Directed by Tim Brade of Tall Boy Media, the clip enlists a platoon of roller derby skaters from all over Victoria. They gracefully weave around the band as the track plays, creating a happy maelstrom around the performers and never failing to put a smile on their faces.

Lonely  betrays its joyous exterior with some slightly worrisome lyricism, the song seeming to hold isolation at its heart. However according to McGinnity, it’s a story of triumph in the face of negativity, rather than of a person being crippled by it.

Lonely  serves as McGinnity’s protective swan song for the power of support at the right time, and the skaters swirling around her are a beautiful way of portraying the sentiment.
