PREMIERE: GRWS states his claim as a surefire future sensation with debut single Prey

Clear a path, because GRWS is coming through. Fresh out of an EP recording session at the esteemed 301 Studios with Dan Frizza (Montaigne, Bernard Fanning), this up-and-coming producer is set to make a fiery start to his career with his debut single Prey.

It’s the first cut off his debut EP are you happy, baby? a gleaming, tightly produced number which belies GRWS’ newcomer status.

The solo project of 19 year old George Stribling, GRWS takes on indie pop with a Kevin Parker-esque attitude. By writing and performing every part of his music himself, Stribling acquires a level of control unreachable by most bands.

With dynamite production, meticulous construction and a newfound creative force at the helm, GRWS is shaping up to be a surefire Aussie sensation.

Prey is viciously catchy, and struts the line of past hits like Outkast’s Hey Ya or Foster The People’s Pumped Up Kicks in that it appears to tackle a subject matter which is slightly less than heartwarming.

Although bright and glamorous on the outside, lyrically this song is haunted by longing and tainted love, repeatedly ripping metaphor from the natural world to paint a sombre picture. But who doesn’t love some damaged goods in the music world?

So what should you expect from the rest of the EP? We asked Stribling, who was also kind enough to also give us a cheeky listen to three unreleased tracks.

“The ‘are you happy, baby?’ EP is a collection of songs written over the course of about four years. The songs are about everything from breakups to forced love – but hopefully they leave themselves open to interpretation.”

Sonically, Prey  very much opens up the can on GRWS’ output to come. The rest of the EP walks similar territory; a bouncy release with far too many catchy hooks to even count. However Stribling’s darker undercurrents still flow freely beneath this sunny exterior, adding a layer of gloomy complexity which enhances the release a thousand times over.

Watch out for this one, it’s going to make waves.
