PREMIERE: Empat Lima navigate the chaos of childbirth on their latest track Cynthia

When it came to recording their debut album and filming their latest video, Melbourne’s Empat Lima were given the ultimate deadline; their bass player Sooji Kim’s pregnancy.

The video clip for Cynthia, depicting “the enactment of modern urban birthing rituals,” was filmed at their local pub The Lomond Hotel in Brunswick just hours before Kim giving birth.

Clocking in at one minute and 52 seconds, Empat Lima’s latest offering Cynthia is a punk-powered and chaotic explosion of garage pop.

The urgency and chaos of the situation feeds the video’s tumultuous charm, delivering an upbeat, twangy, and easy to dance to rhythm. Cynthia, written by vocalist and guitarist Steph Brett, is the fourth single released ahead of their forthcoming debut album, set to be released early next year.

Influenced by the sounds of ’60s Indonesian garage pop, Empat Lima began as a band by covering their favourite Asian/Western tracks. The three-piece have been belting out tunes together for a few years now, playing alongside bands such as Parsnip, The Frowning Clouds, and Tropical Fuckstorm.

Adopting and transforming the best bits of their jangly Indonesian influence, Empat Lima deliver a sound that belongs entirely to themselves.
