PREMIERE: Capre lay down the smooth beats on Get Off On You

We’re well and truly in the age of the producer. A broad term sure, yet it feels appropriate. Who’d have thought a bunch of skinny kids messing around with a laptop and a microphone in their bedrooms would be turning heads around the world?

And yet that is the wonderful reality we are faced with; some of the best music coming out of Australia right now is being made by people who are in between running off to school and part-time jobs. If that isn’t a beautiful thing then I don’t know what is. Case in point, just let the slowly pulsing sounds of Get Off On You from Capre creep into your mind.

Capre premi

It’s intelligent beat making at its best. Brissie duo Capre lay down the smooth beats on their latest Get Off On You, a brooding and rewarding synth piece.

The Brisbane duo have been making beats together since 2012 and have released a handful of singles since then. Though three years doesn’t seem like a long time but it has been time well spent, the pair growing together as musicians to grow their abilities and craft to exciting places. Head honcho at triple J Unearthed Dave Ruby Howe has called Capre’s music “Intelligent beatmaking and that more or less sums up the best thing about Capre; they’re interesting to listen to.

Again with the broad strokes, I know, but there’s a point I’m ramping up to. There is a lot of stupid music out there, especially within the sphere of electronic music to appeal to the lowest common denominator. So when you come across something with actual heart like Get Off On You you’ll want to weep for joy. Capre take their love for synths, drums and alternate rock and apply the best of those principles here. The synths float in the air like the early morning fog. They’re calm and reassuring, inciting a sense of intrigue.

The vocals are the wisps of sunshine that permeate through. They croon softly striking the right balance between ambivalence and sultriness. It carries the weight of the song as it leads us on a journey through the brooding psyche of a man not quite sure what to make of the world.

This feeling’s pulling me down/ And I never asked for it/ Winds can carry my thoughts away from here/ And they’ll be back again, they’re always back againecho gently against the hip-hop beat, an introspective plea to be free from the burden of one’s own mind. The different elements within the track convey the message nicely, portraying a mind that is in many places at once. At no time does the song feel overwhelming, the boys keep things subtle and lets the song develop organically.

Get Off On You is the first single taken from Capre’s debut EP Cassette Mixte out in the next few weeks. Keep an eye out for all the latest news and shows on their social pages.
