Perth, a city with a population of just over a million people, has the most millionaires per capita in Australia. At the rate the capital city of WA is churning them out they’ll also have the most bands per capita in the country soon enough.
Now, while you may be thinking that quantity doesn’t equate to quality, in the case of Perth it somehow does. Bands and artists like Koi Child, Hideous Sun Demon, Shit Narnia, FOAM, Mathas (just to name a few) are all making tsunami size waves in the paddling pool that is the national music scene and people around the world are starting to take notice.
With some help from their Koi Child brethren and the legendary Mikey Young, Perth’s Regular Boys nail sun-split garage rock with a sarcastic fuzzy tinge on Hunt.
The most isolated city in the world’s most recent creation, Regular Boys, is testament to the quality I’m talking about. Made up of recognisable faces from other well known WA acts, the quintet (which means five, for those of us who struggled / are struggling through high school English classes) have just dropped their debut single from their upcoming EP, Have A Go, and it’s an absolute banger.
Immediately the tune, Hunt, will strike a major chord with those of us who are partial to a bit of 90’s and 90’s-influenced garage rock. Recent bands like Brooklyn’s Parquet Courts and Australia’s Eddy Current Suppression Ring come to mind as similar artists, as well as older acts like Pavement and Guided By Voices, but Regular Boys have created something that’s much more unique and engaging than a simple derivative sound.

What’s immediately captivating is the guitar parts that quickly switch between driving, lo fi sounds and squealing, solos akin to that of (dare I say) Sonic Youth and co. Pair that with versatile drumming, killer bass lines and horns (played by Sam and Christian from Koi Child) in the chorus’ and you’ve got yourself a tune more killer than Ted Bundy.
From a lyrical standpoint, Hunt was written and delivered with a cheeky, sort of sarcastic approach that makes this even better. Regarding catchiness, I will stake money on it that you’ll be singing “we won’t fight them anymore” for at least the rest of the day, if not longer.
Recorded at home and mastered by Mikey Young (Eddy Current, Total Control.) and fuelled, I assume, by a steady diet of Emu Export and other brilliant WA inventions, our first listen to the Have A Go EP promises big things from Regular Boys.
