Power laces are (almost) real and you can wear them next year (maybe)

After all the hullabaloo that was Back to the Future Day it turns out there was one more shred of awesome to come forth, in no less than the form of Nike actually creating the Nike Mags and gifting the first prototype not actually working pair to actor Michael J. Fox.

Power Laces are real

While hover-boards and dehydrated pizza are yet to be realised the iconic kicks now exist in a limited series. The Mags will be available via auction next year, with the money raised donated to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s research. We can all agree that’s a worthwhile cause.

In a statement Nike said “Almost 30 years ago, Nike was asked to collaborate on a movie that would feature scenes set in the futuristic world of 2015. The resulting Nike Mag reinvented the conventional lacing system, integrating it into an inimitable design that became an enduring beacon of popular culture“.

Today, Nike delivered a gift to Michael J. Fox introducing the innovation to the shoe’s first, and most celebrated, wearer. This innovation advances what was coined the Nike Mag’s “power laces,” combining thearchetype invention with digital technology. The result is an individually responsive system that senses the wearer’s motion to provide adaptive on-demand comfort and support.”
