Moses Gunn Collective – Morning Shakes

Remember the last night you passed out on the couch because you drank away your sorrows after being rejected by your crush… yeah neither do I, because I don’t know whether it was a dream or real. I actually couldn’t care less because unlike some people in our lives, there is music we can seek refuge in to ease our pain and have peace of mind knowing that it will not let us down.

moses gunn collective

Moses Gunn Collective’s unrelenting energised sound easily morphs between rock genres. They’re deceptively deadly with experience and charm.

Like the immediate moment you completely emerge from a daze, the slow releasing and highly vivacious at moments of climax, Moses Gunn Collective, succeed in formulating a sound that borders between consciousness and a daydream – they are all knowing, all class and manipulate grunge for ultimate contentment. The alternating between surging electronic and acoustic instrumentation, allows for moments to breathe in an otherwise intense arena of sound that sucks you in with captivation – Moses Gunn Collective tease, appease and repeat such moments throughout.

The Brisbanian psych-pop-rock band with Aidan Moore (vocals, guitar), Samuel Sargent (drums), Alex Mitchell (bass) and Lewis Stephenson (guitar), and their continually refreshing sound, assures you that you’ll always end up in a good place no matter where its unpredictably decides to take you. With band members originating from various individual projects of Orphans Orphans, The Belligerents, The Furrs, Morning Harvey and The Family Jordan, if you listened to all of these experienced bands, the result of Moses Gunn Collective won’t surprise you.

With pockets of dizzying distortion to add more character, Shalala is like a prism as it refracts light – a blinding and intense source of energy strikes through raw and robust guitar lines, leaving you in this dispersed and gloriously colourful state of mind.  The use of vox pedals to create dreamy and intoxicating melodies, entwined with the sweet and nurturing charm of the line “Shalala la la” , makes this tune unforgettable.

Mary is a bluesy, down tempo, alternative-folk track, with pounding piano chords to raise and drive it along. Add in some foot-stomping beats, clapping, some catchy ‘oohs’ and ‘ahhs’ and a final trippy outro to wrap it all up and you’ve got yourself a classic. The track reminds me of Bob Evans‘ pop vibe, but doused in psychedelia – it’s a great combo to discover through Moses Gunn Collective. The opening growl of Ghost Life sets into motion this seemingly dreary and down-trodden tune, which bursts in a brief,  ferociously tormented guitar riff, easily mistaken for one of the greats.

Happy: What was the process like creating your debut EP, Morning Shakes?

MGC: We recorded nearly everything live with our good friend Konstantin Kersting at Airlock Studios and The Plutonium, both in Brisbane. Then we sent them off to our good friend Magoo to make everything sound beautiful. It was a very pleasant experience.

Happy: Tell me about the track Mary? So is Mary a real person? What’s the story behind the track?

MGC: Mary is a love song, but she is not in fact a person. Or is she? Mary could be a lover or a bag of drugs, either way she’s gonna take you away with all her sweet promises, it may be dreamy bliss or it may be a complete downer.

Happy: What can people expect from your EP? Are there particular messages, vibes, sounds, or stories that you want to really stand out?

MGC: The vibe is psychotropic and varying shades of pink. There is a rather funny story about the love between a man and a dog if you listen close enough. We want people to sit back and think “am I the only girl in the world?”

Happy: Just looking at how you’ve described your sound, it’s a rather enticing combination (Psychedelic, Neo-Psych, Soul, Tropicana, Rock, Rock and Roll). What artists do you draw your influences from?

MGC: T. Rex, Beck, Connan Mockasin. Lots of old-timey 50s skiffle. Some 1930s Tropicana from the beatnik movement. Fingerpainting and platform double suede, disco lemonade.

Happy:  What’s next for Moses Gunn Collective? Tours? Working on more music?

MGC: We’re going to tour in December, then make an album. After that we’ll find ourselves some life partners.

Happy: What can people expect from your live shows?

MGC: Erect feelings and a heightened sense of community.

Happy: What makes you happy?

MGC: My housemate Simon and his large collection of colouring in books. Also naked glitter.

The five-track EP Morning Shakes is to be released December 2nd. Check them out on tour! They will knock you down and hopefully impress you with their immoveable synergy, taking you on a much needed escapade .
