MAXON’s New World: the rising pop star talks The Voice, evolving as an artist and how fucked up the TV industry is

MAXON is Melbourne’s next pop sensation, and she’s just about ready to meet you for the very  first time. After a stint on The Voice and the release of her debut EP New World in April, she took a back seat with her career, finding her true self in the process.

In a little under two weeks, she’ll be ready to reveal the new MAXON, officially launching her EP in the process. With the event closing in, we caught up with her for a quick chat.

With raw, homegrown pop on the rise, MAXON’s sassy and stunningly vocal stylings are just what Australia is craving most.

HAPPY: Hey there, what are you up to at the moment?

MAXON: Hey! Right now, I’m sifting through footage from my video shoot yesterday. We are releasing a clip this week for my single Solid Gold.

HAPPY: Excited to debut the live show? What kind of surprises can we expect?

MAXON: Well, it wouldn’t be a surprise if I told you now would it? (Laughs) I am super excited about this show though. It’s the first time playing these songs with a band and we have some awesome ideas being thrown around in rehearsal. It’s nothing like I’ve ever done before.

HAPPY: How is the new MAXON we’ll be meeting on December 10th different from the old you?

MAXON: It’s been a little over one year since MAXON launched into the world. We had a small break through the year developing and working on new music to release in 2017. I guess you can say she’s has come out of her shell and you’ll be seeing her truly for the very first time.

HAPPY: Worker’s is an amazing venue, have you been seeing gigs there for a while? Which were some of your favourites?

MAXON: The Worker’s Club is awesome. The last time I was on this stage was when I was singing backing vocals for a friend. Funnily enough, he’s my guitarist for the launch. I also recently saw the lovely BATTS perform there with her ridiculously talented band made up of Will Cuming (LANKS), Hayden Calnin and Lachlan O’Kane (Dorsal Fins). What a line-up!

HAPPY: How was your time on The Voice, and how do you think it impacted your career?

MAXON: The show was a great experience and a good learning curve for me. I was only there for a short time but I feel like I grew up a lot and took home what I really wanted. That and a couple of new songs about how fucked up the television industry is (laughs).

HAPPY: Why do you think singing competitions have always been so popular in Australia?

MAXON: It’s a bit of a mystery to me actually. I don’t really watch much TV so before this year I’d hardly seen the show. I went on the show because I was asked to and I thought, why not? Any experience is a good experience.

HAPPY: Do you think these shows are a solid way for new artists to break out?

MAXON: I think this really depends on the artist and a number of other factors. It’s not for everyone, it’s not the only way to break through on a commercial level but it can help boost your profile if you already have a sense of direction.

HAPPY: Your support acts for the gig are amazing, are these hand-picked MAXON favourites?

MAXON: ESSIE and Eilish Gilligan are the supports for the show and I think they are both incredible artists and songwriters. And yes, hand-picked Maxi-faves!

HAPPY: Who else are you loving in Melbourne at the moment?

MAXON: I feel like I have to talk about Ngaiire right now even though she’s not from Melbourne. I don’t know where I have been but I got to see her for the first time last week and damnnn that girl can sing. I am in love.

HAPPY: Where are you heading from here?

MAXON: New music in 2017 and lots of touring.
